What we keep with every measurement

A measurement travels with its history, and we keep all of it.

We keep four things with every measurement. We keep the date it was taken, the sample it was taken from, the instrument that took it and the operator who ran it. We keep a retained sample of the batch as well.

When a result surprises us, the record is how we find out whether the surprise is real. We check whether the instrument was the same one as last time, whether the sample came from the same batch and whether a different person ran it. Most surprises turn out to be one of those, and the record lets us say which.

The habit shapes how new people join us. Everyone who works here learns to repeat a measurement before accepting it, and to expect that of the people around them. We learn the habit by doing it every day.

We write this down because it is the part of the work nobody sees from outside. If the medicine comes, it will be judged on what it does. Whether it can be trusted will rest on records like these, kept long before anyone asked to see them.
