A number never stands alone

What we keep with every measurement, and why we would not trust a result without it.

A measurement on its own is a claim. A measurement with its history is evidence. The difference is everything that travels with the number: the date it was taken, the sample it was taken from, the instrument that took it, and the person who ran it. We keep all four with every result, and we keep a retained sample of the batch as well.

This is not paperwork for its own sake. When a result surprises us, the record is how we find out whether the surprise is real. Was the instrument the same one as last time? Was the sample from the same batch? Did a different person run it? Most surprises turn out to be one of those things, and the record lets us say which.

The habit shapes how new people join us. Everyone who works here learns to repeat a measurement before believing it, and to expect that of the people around them. Reproducibility is a habit, not a final step, and habits are learned by doing them every day rather than by reading about them.

We write this down because it is the part of the work nobody sees from outside. The medicine, if it comes, will be judged on what it does. Whether it can be trusted will rest on records like these, kept long before anyone asked to see them.
